Singer/songwriter Cooper Kenward brings the intimacy of country ballads into a folk rock setting on Glass Mountain Rodeo’s eponymous debut. In his stories about middle-class heroes, love, loss and nostalgia persist, but from the perspective of a guitarist with an ear for edgy harmonies and subtle production. Each of the ten tracks have a solid foundation of honest telecaster riffs that alternate with tremulous vocals. And the soulful drumming of Jason Slota and modern production stylings of Robert Shelton give the album a wide range of feeling and a live-sounding glow.

At times, the orchestration behind the country soul foundation comes into the foreground. You’ll hear trombone, pedal steel, organ, bass clarinet and the occasional synth. Most tunes are made for dancing, others are poignant and misty. But through Kenward’s guitar playing (like a young Neil Young's) and his vocal fill-ins (like an old Bob Dylan's) the vision of Glass Mountain Rodeo is clear — bring together a diverse group of music appreciators and give them music to drink to.

lyrics

Modest graffiti on the stucco bathroom wall
it looks like big dick jones still owns this stall.
Hanging with the midday drinkers, the sit alone thinkers
trying out best not to do much at all.

Scrolling through my phone for answers
worried that it’s giving me cancer
sometimes I feel like a dancer with no clothes at all
no clothes on at all

it’s 2am and I’m still stuffing my face
kid’s from prom are filling up this place
they’ve got burgers, shakes, and sparkle blue french fries.
and for some strange reason in this fast food joint I felt alive.

the moon is hanging low
the city’s casting its glow
If I knew what I wanted I would know where to go
there’s nowhere to go

This coffee is really sorting out my mind
hash browns, eggs, and lots of un-accounted time.
wondering about 5 years from now and where i will be
then I get distracted and think about my shows on tv

wish that I had a plan
but i’ll keep doing the best that I can
everything I ever wanted in the palm of my
