Singer/songwriter Cooper Kenward brings the intimacy of country ballads into a folk rock setting on Glass Mountain Rodeo’s eponymous debut. In his stories about middle-class heroes, love, loss and nostalgia persist, but from the perspective of a guitarist with an ear for edgy harmonies and subtle production. Each of the ten tracks have a solid foundation of honest telecaster riffs that alternate with tremulous vocals. And the soulful drumming of Jason Slota and modern production stylings of Robert Shelton give the album a wide range of feeling and a live-sounding glow.
At times, the orchestration behind the country soul foundation comes into the foreground. You’ll hear trombone, pedal steel, organ, bass clarinet and the occasional synth. Most tunes are made for dancing, others are poignant and misty. But through Kenward’s guitar playing (like a young Neil Young's) and his vocal fill-ins (like an old Bob Dylan's) the vision of Glass Mountain Rodeo is clear — bring together a diverse group of music appreciators and give them music to drink to.

about
dancing in the dark
peeing in the park
getting drunk on whiskey and beer
fireworks and I wrestle in the dirt
and my vision ain’t too clear
stalking the night
under sodium lights
smoking in the park till 4
I got this guitar that I play when I’m drunk
and I don’t care anymore
I don’t mind if my money’s almost gone
as long as I keep singing these old country songs
and if there are burritos and my beer stays cold
I don’t mind going nowhere and getting old
I had me a job and I had me a purpose
but they both didn’t do anything
now I sit on my ass and I play this guitar
and do my best to sing
I may seem lazy and I may seem dumb
but there’s one thing you should understand
I know what I want and what I want to do is nothing
with a beer in my right hand
I don’t mind if my money’s almost gone
as long as I keep singing these old country songs
and if there are burritos and my beer stays cold
I don’t mind going nowhere and getting old
watching the days roll on by
got no cares anymore
I travel the world by flipping through the channels
and never leaving my front door
I’m getting fat and I may die young
at least I’m not being told
how to live my life and smile brightly
and to sell my god damed soul
I don’t mind if my money’s almost gone
as long as I keep singing these old country songs
and if there are burritos and my beer stays cold
I don’t mind going nowhere and getting old
