Singer/songwriter Cooper Kenward brings the intimacy of country ballads into a folk rock setting on Glass Mountain Rodeo’s eponymous debut. In his stories about middle-class heroes, love, loss and nostalgia persist, but from the perspective of a guitarist with an ear for edgy harmonies and subtle production. Each of the ten tracks have a solid foundation of honest telecaster riffs that alternate with tremulous vocals. And the soulful drumming of Jason Slota and modern production stylings of Robert Shelton give the album a wide range of feeling and a live-sounding glow.

At times, the orchestration behind the country soul foundation comes into the foreground. You’ll hear trombone, pedal steel, organ, bass clarinet and the occasional synth. Most tunes are made for dancing, others are poignant and misty. But through Kenward’s guitar playing (like a young Neil Young's) and his vocal fill-ins (like an old Bob Dylan's) the vision of Glass Mountain Rodeo is clear — bring together a diverse group of music appreciators and give them music to drink to.

Track Name: Sue
Sue was in a barroom on the border of Tennessee
dancing real slow to pedal steel and I nearly fell to my knees
I ordered her a beer but she said no i'll take a whiskey instead
we played pool into the evening as the neon filled my head

We got married in a church god knows where
ordered a ring from a vending machine and honeymooned at the fair
woke up in a motel room frayed and burned
there’s many things I thought I knew but there’s still more to be learned

I don’t mind living the way I do
as long as I get a little loving
I’ll give a little loving to you

after some years we had a boy and we took him from state to state
Showing him all the things that one can love and hate
times got tough but we made it right we would wait to buy gas
every town has a secret you just have to ask

I don’t mind living the way we do
as long as we get a little loving lord
give a little loving a whole lot of loving to you

Sue left me and the boy in a town called Fredericksburg
leaving a note and an empty glass that said not to go looking for her
we settled down and took it slow I got a job in town
playing pedal steel with the boys and creating that lonesome sound

I don’t mind living the way I do
as long as I get a little loving lord
I start thinking about sue
Track Name: Nights Like These
walking down the street
The cold creeping through your feet
the wind pushes back your hair
but you don’t care at all
because we’re dancing down broadway
underneath the lights
feeling like we own the night

eating pizza in the back of a bar
trying to name all the stars
the people come and go
finding shelter from the snow
3 drinks in I start singing songs by tom jones
everyone joins in on the chorus

nights like these
are strange and wild
nights like these
are strange and wild

hearts beating out of your chest
but you don’t ever want to rest
so you have another cigarette
just to feel it on your breath
as the sun rises above the buildings
on your walked home
you fell like you finally knew someone

you lie awake in bed
trying to sleep but you can’t
you start laughing at something I
said that you thought was dumb
finally you start sleeping
and your dreams they don’t make sense
and they never do.

nights like these
are strange and wild
nights like these
are strange and wild
Track Name: Drifting Near Dunsmuir
Sitting in a boat on a river
waiting for the fish to bite
watching the day drift away
I feel alright

Sun is peaking through the trees
I’m taking in the morning breeze
I might not catch anything today
and that would be ok

taking my time
and letting it all drift away
on this warm slow winters day

birds are making crazy patterns
in the orange colored sky
It’s so nice to sit back
and watch them pass by

I wish that I am the river
always rolling on
everything goes through me
all my troubles would be gone

aking my time
and letting it all drift away
on this warm slow winters day

Sitting in a boat on a river
waiting for the fish to bite
watching the day drift away
I feel alright
yeah I feel alright

I’m alone here
Just sitting alone here
I’m alone here
for the rest of my life

I’m alone here
Just sitting alone here
I’m alone here
on the river by myself
Track Name: Palm of My Hand
Modest graffiti on the stucco bathroom wall
it looks like big dick jones still owns this stall.
Hanging with the midday drinkers, the sit alone thinkers
trying out best not to do much at all.

Scrolling through my phone for answers
worried that it’s giving me cancer
sometimes I feel like a dancer with no clothes at all
no clothes on at all

it’s 2am and I’m still stuffing my face
kid’s from prom are filling up this place
they’ve got burgers, shakes, and sparkle blue french fries.
and for some strange reason in this fast food joint I felt alive.

the moon is hanging low
the city’s casting its glow
If I knew what I wanted I would know where to go
there’s nowhere to go

This coffee is really sorting out my mind
hash browns, eggs, and lots of un-accounted time.
wondering about 5 years from now and where i will be
then I get distracted and think about my shows on tv

wish that I had a plan
but i’ll keep doing the best that I can
everything I ever wanted in the palm of my
Track Name: Coming Home
When you wake up in the city feeling tired from the grind
and the money in your pocket isn’t calming your mind
you’ve got to come out to the country to finally unwind.

I’m coming home
I’m coming home

When you’re drinking to feel at ease, eating heavy, and felling stressed
and the zombies that surround you are also hollow in the chest,
you’ve got to come out to the country, where the air is the best.

I’m coming home
I’m coming home

what is a home but a place to call you’re own
a place to be alone
a place where seeds are sown

I’m coming home
I’m coming home
Track Name: Every Little Thing
every little thing
that I have done up until now
feels dumb

if I could I know I would
change everything
If I could

I want to hold you in my arms
and say
It will be ok
at least for today

I won’t be the man
who builds a deck just to prove
that he’s a man and that he can
I would rather
pull the weeds and plant the seeds
that keep growing on and on..

I want to hold you in my arms
and say
It will be ok
at least for today

I don’t want to die here
until I know what for
I can only wait around in this state
for so long

maybe some day in this universe
there will be a piece of me
floating free

until then I will hold you in my arms
and say
it will be ok.
at least for today
at least for
Track Name: Someone Like You
you look just like a swinging manzanita
and i feel like a tired old oak
you move through a room
like a pickup truck with two of it’s wheels broke
I can hear you sining from down the street
with no rhyme, rhythm or beat
and with that sweet song I’ll still come running
through glass with no shoes on my feet

because someone like you is hard to hold on to
if you come my way I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to do

You’ll wake up at 4am just to bake a pie
mess it up and top it with cream
if you are a hurricane then i’m the sky
and whatever the hell that means
the only way to hold you still
is to put you into a photograph
if my life is a joke and it probably is
you’re gonna have the last laugh

because someone like you is hard to hold on to
if you come why I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to do

If we don’t kill each other
I don’t know what will
were more dangerous
than tigers, laser beams,
atom bombs and oil spills.
quaaludes, jujubes
and freewill.

because someone like you is hard to hold on to
if you come why I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to do
